心，心不存在，其相为明。
我们一般所称的心，是染污的心，是被贪、嗔、痴激起的狂乱思绪。此心不是证悟的明觉，总是被一个接一个的妄念带着跑。当我们与敌、友不期而遇时，嗔或贪的念头被这些情境触动，马上毫无预警地生起。除非马上用适当方法加以对治，不然它们就会很快生根茁壮，增强心中嗔、贪的习气，孳生愈来愈多的业力。
但不论这些念头是多么强烈，它们只是念头，终会融入空性。一旦你证得心之本性，这些看起来忽隐忽现的念头就再也不能愚弄你了。如同云一般，出现一会儿，复又消散在虚空中；同样地，妄念生起后，持续了一会儿，又消失在心的空性中。在实相中，根本不曾有事发生。
当阳光照在水晶上，会现出许多颜色的彩光，但并没有任何实物可以抓取。同样地，各式各样的念头――虔诚心、悲心、恶意、欲望――完全没有实体，这就是观世音菩萨的心。没有一个念头不是空性。如果在念头生起的刹那能了知念头的空性，念头就会消失，爱执及怨恨永远不能扰乱你的心，烦恼会自行崩解，恶业不会累积，也就没有随后的痛苦。这就是四种事业中的第一个――『息灾』的最高成就。
如果你修行身、语、意的瑜伽，不受念头所缚，此时观世音菩萨的慈悲和你本具的佛性便开始接合而融为一体。禅定的觉受将伴随着虔诚和悲心而增长，如同阳光透过放大镜聚焦而增强力量。这就是第二事业――『增益』的最高成就。
一旦你明白轮回和涅磐的一切现象都只是心的造作，心的本性是空性时，那么要把不净观转化为净观就不成问题――所有现象本具清净地揭显。一般而言，这种了悟可以使你随意控制一切现象，特别是圣者的十自在――控制物质的能力、控制生命的能力、控制业的能力等。俗话说：『能掌握己见，就能掌控一切现象。』你一旦从妄念的势力中解脱出来，就能随心所欲地转化五大，支配无竭的虚空宝藏。伟大的上师龙树菩萨曾在印度的一次大饥荒中，将铁变成黄金，不仅让整个僧团渡过饥荒，还盖了许多新寺院。过去八十四大成就者所显现的各种神通是可能的，因为他们已证得空性，并从妄念中解脱。最后能掌握证悟的本具能力，也就是第三种事业――『怀爱』的最高成就。
一旦你调伏了妄心，就没有何处可匿藏邪灵或恶魔。一旦你充满菩提心，从前认为是邪恶及障碍的力量，此时都被认为是上师的化现，藉此增强你的慈心和悲心。因此，痛苦会消褪，而恶魔、障碍和困难会让你的修行更进一层，这是第四事业――『伏诛』的最高成就。
经由生起次第的修行――观想观世音菩萨并持诵嘛呢咒――你将了悟观世音菩萨的智慧。由这点了悟的火花，智慧会像火燎森林般蔓延开来，这是圆满次第的精华。透过这个修行，心得以调伏，并成就四种相应的事业：障碍、恶行、疾病和痛苦都止息；寿命、功德、财富和智慧皆增长；人们、思想和内在能量将无限制地听命于你；一切恶魔、敌人、障碍及内魔――烦恼，皆得调伏。
